We did it! 650 participants forming a sea manatee in the sand at Anastasia State Park!
STAY TUNED FOR MAY 2013 and the next creation! Thank you all - sponsors, teachers, volunteers and principals. The day's events went along as scheduled except for a late start with the school buses. Not to worry - timing was made up and three elementary schools participated in 27 learning stations on environmental issues and concerns. The theme of the day was Nature's Mosaic. Groups followed rotations trailing mosaic standards of animals who live in the coastal dunes, marshlands and upland hammock. The highlight was making a human mosaic in the shape of a manatee on the beach. Thanks to Debi James and husband and Bob Hanson and pilot, Bjorn Otteson, we captured the event with aerial photography in the tradition of years past.

Kids Ocean Day
Friends of AlA is planning to host its 3rd Environmental Education Fair on May 4, 2012. This annual event has received national award recognition and continues to gain positive public relations for the A1A Scenic & Historic Coastal Byway. Our focus is on kids this year with environmental education offered to elementary students from St. Johns County Schools: Ketterlinus Elementary, R.B. Hunt Elementary and Crookshank Elementary. On Friday May 4th, 2012 Friends of A1A is hosting KIDS OCEAN DAY where invited school children will participate in 27 environmental learning stations and aerial art at Anastasia State Park in St. Augustine Beach. The event is expected to draw over 600 third, fourth & fifth graders from area elementary schools for a day of fun learning about environmental conservation. The theme for the day is “Kids Care” and the highlight will be the creation of students forming a nature mosaic sea manatee in the sand. An aerial photo shoot will render the event most memorable. Activities feature storytelling, music, learning and fun for all 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Overall attendance is expected to far exceed last year with national media coverage. The purpose of these events is to bring like-minded organizations together for interactive learning to make all aware and educate the public in environmental conservation strategies for our A1A corridor. Presenters at KIDS OCEAN DAY are local credentialed biologists, educators, archaeologists, scientists and writers who will conduct 15 minute learning stations (27) on Ocean Literacy and Environmental Topics. Educators will receive teaching materials linked to FCAT standards and developed curricula that links art education to science and nature standards. Themed topics linking ocean literacy are • #2 Ocean and life in the ocean shape the features of the earth • #3 Ocean is a major influence on weather and climate • #4 Ocean makes Earth habitable • #5 Ocean supports a great diversity of life and ecosystems • #6 Ocean and humans are inextricably linked • #7 Ocean is largely unexplored (Note – Lessons concentrate on plants and animals found in the three NE Florida Habitats.)
