History by Place

A1A CathedralScenic and Historic Coastal Byway evolved to serve the unique communities located along the corridor.  A trip along the corridor introduces travelers to the distinct attributes of these communities.

After World War I, the construction boom of bridges linking the Florida's Atlantic coast barrier islands prompted the re-designation of the A1A route through St. Johns County.  To this day, the A1A Scenic and Historic Coastal Byway is referred to by a variety of names.  These unique names reflect the distinct heritage and history of each community.
